Policy + Procedures

When registering for lessons, you can be assured of a quality music education. An individually planned program of study will be carefully designed to meet the needs of the student, and help realize their musical potential. Priority will be given to my current students wishing to continue their music studies. To Register, please contact Ann.

Policy

In registering for classes and lessons, the student and teacher are contracting for a specific number of lessons during the academic year, September to mid-May. Special consideration is given to students wishing to extend their lessons into the summer. Private one-on-one lessons missed due to illness will be made up if a time mutually convenient to the student and teacher can be arranged. No reason other than illness is acceptable for missing a scheduled lesson time. Advanced notice of cancellation is appreciated. Lessons missed by the student will be charged; those cancelled by the teacher will be made up or refunded. There is no refund for missed class lessons.

Fees

Payment of fees may be made in full, or in instalments. Fees are payable in advance; the first instalment is due at the start of the term, the remainder by post-dated cheques or e-transfer, at the first of the month. Please contact Ann for fees and payment schedules.

Books

Music books will be selected according to the needs of each individual or group. Students will be asked to purchase their own music, through on-line or in person shopping.

Recitals

Recitals will be presented twice a year, one prior to the Christmas holiday, and one toward the middle of May. These recitals will be via zoom, so families close and far away will be able to attend.

Examinations

Students may elect to take examinations during the year, if they wish. A high standard of performance, achieved through regular practise and attendance is expected.

Practise

Establish a quiet place for regular, uninterrupted practise and share your interest with a parent or household member - they can provide enthusiasm to your weekly accomplishments, and be your “cheering” committee!
Practise the assigned lessons regularly throughout the week. The following hints may assist in the establishment of productive and enjoyable practises.

  • Don’t cram all the practising into one or two days. It is not productive, and the results will be disappointing and discouraging. Practise at least five days a week in addition to the lesson!

  • Leave all non-musical thoughts, problems, and excitement in another room during the practise. The problems may get bored and go away during the practise and the excitements will still be there to enjoy when the practise is completed.

  • As much as possible, practise at the same time each day. Schedule practises for an “alert”, “energetic” time of the day. It may be helpful to divide each day’s practise between morning and afternoon or before and after supper.

  • At each practise, look at the assignment book to review the objectives of the practise before staring to play the piece. Even better, finish your practise by “logging” your time in your notebook!

  • Enjoy the challenge of learning new music and achieving new objectives. The practise may be difficult but the rewards are tremendous!

  • Every now and then play through favourite pieces that may not be part of the assigned practise, or perform a “mini-recital” for family and friends.

The First Lesson

During the first lesson, the teacher and the student will discuss musical objectives for the year, and decide on a course of study. Students may bring current and favourite music books, or have on hand new books or music that has already been selected. Most importantly, bring a smile!
